- Abstract
This essay analyses discourse on classroom films in the Netherlands from 1941 to 1953. The Stichting Nederlandse Onderwijs Film (the Netherlands Foundation of Educational Film) was then the main distributor of such films. Its publications from the 1940s advised Dutch teachers on the use of audio-visual media in schools. They emphasized that classroom films were different from other types of shorts, especially conventional theatrical films. Although such normative writings do not provide a basis for a typology of the material, they are useful in other ways. First, they shed light on the pedagogical climate in which teaching films had to function. Second, they help with their interpretation as audio-visual texts.
