- Abstract
The book "Religious and Philosophical Conversion in the Ancient Mediterranean Traditions" edited by Athanasios Despotis and Hermut Löhr is a collection of sixteen chapters that explore the topic of conversion in ancient Mediterranean traditions. The book is divided into five parts, covering interdisciplinary research, ancient Judaism, philosophical traditions, the New Testament, and mystery cults and Late Antiquity. The authors aim to define conversion as a transformation of the self, involving the rejection of an old identity and the acceptance of a new one. While the book provides valuable insights into the topic, it is noted that the absence of social and religious historians is a limitation, and the inclusion of Patristic and monastic literature could have enriched the inquiry.
