- Title
Bit Parts: Dismembering Elvis in Recent Hollywood Films.
- Authors
Carlson, Thomas C.
- Abstract
The article reflects on Elvis Presley's renewed presence concerning the subtle shifts in his continuing cultural valuation. Presley appeared in a flurry of Hollywood films, and among those films was a group in which he appeared as himself including "Heartbreak Hotel," "Mystery Train," and "True Romance." Meanwhile, the author argues that the diversity of Elvis fragments and sidelong references in recent movies is not the result of humorless pastiche, nor are those partial rearticulations of Elvis empty signifiers tossed confetti-wise across the mass-mediated landscape.
