- Title
The Horse in Backstretch Culture.
- Authors
Helmer, James
- Abstract
This research explores the local culture of the backstretch of a harness racetrack and investigates the main source of social cohesion and meaning, the horse itself. The paper describes key features of the context and analyzes how the horse influences local systems of meaning -- economic, technological, chronemic, interpersonal, and psychological. The study indicates how the significance of daily experience for individuals arises from interplay and tensions among such local systems of meaning.
