- Abstract
This article discusses a case study involving a patient named Patricia and her therapist. The therapist reflects on the limitations of ego-supportive psychotherapy and the concept of empathy. The therapist's clinical approach involves exploring the "alchemical third," which refers to the unconscious connection between the therapist and patient influenced by archetypal patterns. Patricia's history reveals a lack of early nurturing and traumatic experiences, leading to difficulties in forming positive relationships. The article also explores the concept of a "fusional field" and the therapist's use of alchemical imagery in understanding Patricia's inner dynamics. The therapist acknowledges the challenges of working with such deeply wounded individuals and the importance of peer consultation. The article concludes by emphasizing the ongoing search for healing and the therapist's role in providing a safe symbolic space for the patient.
