- Abstract
The Australian Agricultural and Resource Economics Society (AARES) is fortunate to have had J. Brian Hardaker as a member and contributor. Hardaker served as the president of AARES in 1984 and co-edited the Australian Journal of Agricultural & Resource Economics from 1978 to 1980. He was recognized as a distinguished fellow of AARES in 2005. Hardaker's expertise in mathematical programming applications in farm planning was highly valued, and he co-authored books on agricultural decision analysis and coping with risk in agriculture. He also had a strong interest in island economies and made significant contributions to the analysis of development opportunities and threats in Melanesia and Polynesia. Hardaker was known for his creativity, diligence, and commitment to getting things right. He was a dedicated mentor to students and played an active role in improving social interaction between members of the Armidale community and overseas students. After retiring from the University of New England in 1994, Hardaker continued to work as a consultant and honorary professor at other universities. He passed away before the publication of a book dedicated to him, Managing Risk in Agriculture: A Development Perspective. Hardaker is survived by his wife, three sons, and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren. His caring and tutelage are greatly missed by his students and colleagues.
