- Abstract
The infection caused by Helicobacter pylori is linked to developing gastritis, peptic ulcer and gastric cancer. Several physiopathological mechanisms have been elucidated about the adherence to the gastric epithelium by this pathogen, being the outer membrane proteins (OMPs) its principal research scope. Thus, interest in this protein family is not only because its role during colonization and development of clinical outcomes but also, the fact that some of them can be considered as a novel therapeutic target. This review describes the principal OMP families detailing its role during epithelial cell's colonization and highlights how studying the OMPs properties could contribute towards the development of strategies to control and eradicate this important infection.
