The article studies the forces behind the changes in interbank payment networks across countries. It describes the real-time gross settlement (RTGS) mode where modern large-value payment systems work and which requires large amounts of liquidity. It also states that the use of central bank money by RTGS systems as medium of settlement made central banks to push for the acceptance of RTGS.
