- Abstract
The article presents an exploration into the diplomatic role of the U.S. official Robert R. Livingston in the negotiations and arrangements for the Louisiana Purchase. Details are given describing the political context of the arrangement, citing several concurrent treaties between the U.S. and Spain, France and Great Britain. Multiple selections from the letters between Livingston and the American British ambassador Rufus King are provided, describing the communications and debates with important actors in the process such as French diplomats and politicians Francois Barbé-Marbois and Charles Maurice de Talleyrand-Périgord.
