- Abstract
The article discusses the campaign initiated by public health educators to empower the youth in the planning, design and implementation of health promotion programs, specifically in the context of tobacco control in the U.S. It is cited that the American Legacy Foundation (Legacy) emphasized youth participation and programming in its mission to engage new dialogue about the role of tobacco in the lives of American youth. Legacy created the Statewide Youth Movement Against Tobacco Use (SYMATU) program, designed to educate and engage young people to be aware of tobacco control. Moreover, Legacy also decided to develop an evaluation component which would be backed by a strong conceptual framework contrived in consultation with experts on community coalition building and youth empowerment.
