- Abstract
This study aims to compare the changes in the QOL of people residing in the rented backyard rooms and free-standing and backyard shacks in the metropolitan municipalities in Gauteng (City of Johannesburg [CoJ], City of Tshwane [CoT] and Ekurhuleni [EMM]) from 2001 to 2011. Five QOL indices indicating average percentages for the socio-economic (education and employment and income), ownership of household goods and service-delivery dimensions of QOL, and an overall QOL index, were calculated. Three-way mixed-model analysis of variances (ANOVAs) determined if statistically significant changes occurred in the five QOL indices in all of the dwelling types and municipalities from 2001 to 2011. The socio-economic, ownership of household goods and service-delivery dimensions of QOL, and the overall QOL in all of the dwelling types and municipalities from 2001 to 2011 improved. The backyard room tenants experienced the best QOL, followed by the backyard shacks and lastly the free-standing shacks. The overall QOL between the municipalities do not differ, except for the CoT where backyard shack tenants experienced a poorer QOL than the same dwelling type in the other municipalities. Policy implications are discussed.
