- Abstract
The article discusses the occupation of portions of Confederate Texas by the U.S. Army's Department of New Mexico during the Civil War. Conflicts between Confederate troops and Mexican Americans living in New Mexico are detailed. The establishment of Camp Easton along the Canadian River is discussed. The hardships of military life in Mesilla, New Mexico are described. The military actions of Brigadier General James H. Carleton, commander of the Department of New Mexico, against both Confederate forces and Native Americans are detailed.
