- Title
A Stain on the American Soul.
- Authors
Wood, Daniel James
- Abstract
The article discusses the author Herman Melville and the public's perception of him as a visionary. The author argues that Melville's clarity of vision was a result of his obscurity and the distance at which he removed himself from antebellum America. Topics include Melville's stance on U.S. slavery, an in-depth discussion of his novella "Benito Cereno," in which he rejected the debate that linked slavery and religion, and the legitimization of the Manifest Destiny.
