- Abstract
This article focuses on the use of simple apparatus for demonstrating the action of the heart and circulation of blood. The heart and circulation model described in this article is of fundamentally simple design. It can be assembled from standard laboratory equipment in a short period of time. The apparatus is large enough to be used in lecture-table demonstration before a class of thirty or forty science students. Two reservoirs are connected with the two balloons of two pumps to represent the heart. pumps. Two flap valves prevent reversal of flow during contraction of the balloons. The balloons are activated by a stream of compressed air which enters two glass cylinders through two glass tubes. The two tubes are connected in series so that the two pumps act simultaneously. While the pressure of air in the cylinders increases, liquid is forced out of the balloons through the tubes. The pulmonary and systemic circuits are represented by using four bent glass tubes. The flap valves are made by sewing a small semicircular piece of rubber balloon along the edge of a two holed-rubber stopper.
