- Abstract
Solar energy conversion is one of the most addressed topics in renewable energy. This paper describes the use of a sun tracking power system as a teaching tool in an electrical engineering technology curriculum. Most solar panels in use today are stationary and therefore do not provide the maximum amount of power that they can produce. The objective of this paper is to explain the implementation of a two-axis sun tracking system for laboratory development. The design approach is based on mechatronic principles as it integrates electronics and an embedded control system in a mechanical structure. Demonstrations and hands-on experiments were developed for afreshmen-level electrical course and a junior-level electric machines course. The evaluation methodologies and results are discussed.
