- Abstract
This article focuses on the life and works of Mexican American civil rights leaders César Chávez and Reies Tijerina. During the turbulent period of protest which characterized the 1960s and early 1970s, Mexican Americans joined African Americans, women, and other disadvantaged groups in their attempt to establish unity and demand their share of the American Dream. The four most prominent leaders, Chávez, Rudolfo Gonzales, José Angel Gutiérrez, and Reies Tijerina, all relied heavily on public address to develop their respective organizations and attain their goals. Tijerina and Chávez, both employed public address extensively to gain impressive victories in the face of overwhelming odds against success and to establish reputations as superb rhetors.
