- Authors
Douthwaite, John; Zurru, Elisabetta
- Abstract
The article discusses how the film "Nil by Mouth," starring Ray Winstone and Kathy Burke and directed by Gary Oldman, presents male dominance and discrimination against females. Patriarchy is shown through the character of Ray (Winstone) who lives on crime, liquor and drugs and inflicts dominance to his family and friends through the use of violence. Alterity or female discrimination is shown through the character Valerie's (Burke) battered face and acts of subjugation to Ray's violent moods.
