Describes the creation of transgenic mice that overexpress human uncoupling protein-3 (UCP-3) in skeletal muscle. Methods; Evaluation of adipose tissue mass, fasting plasma glucose levels, insulin levels and glucose clearance rate in the hyperphagic mice; Evidence that UCP-3 has the potential to influence metabolic rate and glucose homeostasis in the whole animal.
