- Abstract
Warehouses are an integral part of any efficient logistics system. Through their integration, a number of issues concerning the movement of material flows in the supply chain, from their origin to the location of final consumption, are properly addressed. In context of intensified competition, warehouses are not only a costs-effective centres, but they are also a vital element of a larger and heavily loaded system. In such a situation, each element of this system has to make the most rational use of its limited resources and its performance is crucial for every other entity in the systems. Warehouses can be seen as sub-systems in which a number of complex processes are managed and the degree of their interaction and integration is crucial, as is our knowledge about that. The complexity of the problem is a result of the nature of warehousing systems and in particular their economics and technical nature. These systems intertwine specific economic and technical competencies and the success of their management lies in their proper collaboration. That requires clarification of the nature of the management of storage systems, especially in the part of the organization of storage areas, where the need for an interdisciplinary approach to management is most evident. In this management problem area, a number of interrelated problems are summarized, concerning the provision of warehouse processes from receiving material flows in the warehouse to their dispatch, especially the processes related to picking and completing orders, which are associated with the highest costs. These processes are related to integrated management of information systems and technologies, storage areas and layout design, strategies and methods for orders picking, as well as the use of storage systems and materials handling machines. In the research paper through literature analysis a number of fundamental issues and principles concerning the organization of storage areas are studied, with an emphasis on the problems of warehouse layout to ensure adequate storage processes - receiving and incoming control, preparation for storage and put away, storage, orders picking, packaging, labelling and other activities such as loading and dispatch. An important part of the work is the applied general classification of storage systems and materials handling machines, as well as the clarification of the connections between them. Knowledge of the abovementioned topics allows successful configuration of storage systems in order to ensure efficient warehousing. Research results indicate the need for further development of a number of studies in the field of warehousing in logistics.
