- Title
Context as Hypertext: Divine Rescue Scenes in the Iliad.
- Authors
Marks, Jim
- Abstract
The article offers the author's insight on several factors which identify the fates of various characters in the battlefield scenes in the epic poem "Iliad." The author states that major heroes by definition always survived in battles and in all narratives until they have performed their supporting roles. He says that the fates of some developed characters in the Iliad were already established in other context such as the character of Odysseus, who was a recognized figured known for his successful return to his native Ithaca. He relates that a divine rescue scene is a dramatic way of preserving the major character. He adds that the rescue of a hero by a god represents an assertion the character will survive a battle and will play an important role in the story.
