- Abstract
Objective: Swan-Neck deformity is characterized by hyperextension of proximal interphalangeal joint and flexion of distal interphalangeal joint. In the treatment process, in addition to conservative methods, orthoses are produced in various ways. Recently, prominent three-dimensional (3D) printer technologies are also used in orthotics production. The aim of this study was to produce a ring orthosis using a 3D printer for the population with swan neck finger deformity and to evaluate the orthosis satisfaction level of these individuals. Materials and Methods: The study was structured in two phases as the production of customized orthoses and the evaluation of participants' satisfaction with use. Computer aided design was used in the design phase of orthosis. Fused deposition modeling method was used in 3Dprinting process. Polylactic acid was preferred as thermoplastic material. The study was conducted with a total of 10 volunteers (7-males and 3-females mean age:55.2 ± 5.31). User satisfaction was evaluated with the Quebec Assistive Technology User Satisfaction Assessment Questionnaire (Q-YTKMD). Results: Custom ring or thoses were produced using 3D printer technology. The average scores recorded for the 8 questions in the Q-YTKMD questionnaire ranged from 4.00 to 5.00 out of 5 points. The participants' mean assistive device satisfaction score was 4,57±0,38. Orthosis weight, ease of use and usefulness were the 3 prominent satisfaction criteria of the participants. Conclusion: The study suggests that it is possible to produce customized orthoses with high user satisfaction for swan neck deformity with 3D printers, which are increasingly used in the healthcare industry today.
