- Abstract
Every year since 1935, the Heisman Trophy has been awarded by the Heisman Trust of New York City to "an individual who deserves designation as the most outstanding college football player in the United States." The award has become the symbol of achievement in college football and is the single most recognizable award in collegiate athletics. This award is also, arguably, the most prestigious individual award in any American sport. Though expectations are set high, not all Heisman Trophy winners have professional careers that parallel their collegiate ones. The purpose of this research was to select every Heisman trophy winner from 1946 to 2004 and evaluate the success of their professional careers. Each Heisman Trophy winner was placed in one of four categories based on objective data from their professional career. These categories were labeled; Outstanding, Commendable, Disappointing, and Non-Existent. Once each player's career was analyzed and categorized, we attempted to answer the question: Does collegiate success translate into success at the professional level? Based on the analysis of data, from the last fifty-eight Heisman Trophy winners, twenty-five of these (43%) had NFL careers that were deemed "disappointing." Ten of the fifty-eight Heisman Trophy winners (17%) had "outstanding" professional careers.
