- Title
Harold M. Groves: Institutionalist and Humanist.
- Authors
Lampman, Robert J.; Young, Chancellor H. Edwin; Heller, Walter W.
- Abstract
The article presents information on Harold M. Groves - economist, ethicator and valued member of the Editorial Board of the journal "Land Economics" for many years, who died suddenly on December 2, 1969 at his home in Madison, Wisconsin. From literally the four corners of the globe have come messages of mourning and of tribute to this rare personage; a man of many parts, but most importantly a humanist as well as an institutionalist. Beyond the sadness and loss the reader senses the afterglow: an awareness that Groves has left an indelible imprint that time and change will not obliterate. His belief in the dignity and worth of man and the capacity for self-realization through reason has taken hold of many of his colleagues and associates, amid former students who themselves now wield power and influence in high places. Presented in this article are portions from some of those messages in the hope that many readers will recognize the man and his contribution in man's struggle "not to despair."
