- Abstract
The study of Irish Food Culture is yet a nascent area of academic investigation, presently at a formative phase in shaping its disciplinary principles. This developmental stage presents opportunities to test a range of research methods to determine how best to match and apply approaches to a vast and unwieldy area of investigation that fits under the broad label of Irish Food Culture. This article explores Irish bread culture in the post-Famine period from the perspective of one baking utensil, the oaten-bread stand. It considers the potential of taking an interdisciplinary approach to discover how the decline in the use of one baking utensil can reflect the changing relationship between people and their bread choices along with wider sociocultural developments. As an exploratory study, data collection was largely restricted to folklore accounts from the National Folklore Collection's 'Schools' Collection', and to an overview of the holdings of iron bread stands in the National Museum of Ireland and the Ulster Folk Museum. Although interaction with a wider range of sources was limited, findings reveal the research potential and importance of establishing closer connections and interconnections between multiple data sources.
