- Abstract
This article draws on an approach from the Anglo-American context and applies it to the German Study of Religions, analyzing introductory literature to the field within the Study of Religions itself. For this purpose two books of the discipline’s introductory genre from the 1980s (Lanczkowski 1980; Stolz 1988) as well as two books from the early 21. century (Hock 2002; Kippenberg, and von Stuckrad 2003) are analyzed and compared concerning their portrayal of Phenomenology of Religion. From that point the article seeks for inferences to the development of answering questions of identity within the field against the background of the so called »Methodenstreit«. The apparent tendency of disclaiming Phenomenology of Religion up to dismissing it reductively is problematized against the dangerous background of its martyr-like mystification, which can be observed in the USA to some extent.
