- Abstract
This study examined how the interests and interventions of external actors created two clashing civilisations in Somalia. Kenya and Ethiopia align with the U.S. to support a Somali central government established in line with the principles of Western democracy to protect the national interests of these external actors. However, Al-Shabaab emerged as a radical Islamic fundamentalist group to resist the Western interests and interventions in Somalia. The study located the U.S. post 9/11 intervention in Somalia within its capitalist interest in the Gulf of Aden and war on terrorism. Ethiopia pursues its interest in the Ogaden region while Kenya's interest lies in thwarting irredentism/secessionism by Kenyan-Somalis and the need to secure Kenya's tourist industry.
