Air-lifts have been used since the nineteenth century for pumping water. A design is presented that can be used for sampling bottom fauna. Its main advantages axe that it is light, cheap to construct, and can be used to sample most freshwater sediments. A preliminary sorting of material can be carried out while the sample is being taken. Test results are presented from a comparison between the air-lift and a Maitland corer.
