An essay is presented on teaching civic education in Mexico. The author explores the dual role of the school teacher as democratic citizen and as professional educator and transmitter of societal ideal values, comments on the contradictions between the idealized role of education in developing good citizens and the way schools tend to legitimate existing social hegemonies, and discusses how civil education ought to be a shared social task not limited to the classroom teaching of civics.
