- Abstract
This article reports findings from a qualitative analyses of interviews with five first-generation immigrant Indian mothers caring for a child with a developmental disability in the United States. The interviews aimed to probe the reasons underlying maternal stress while dealing with their child's special educators and doctors. Thematic analyses of the interviews yielded five key themes: (a) lack of partnership, (b) preparation, education, and research, (c) cultural differences, (d) lack of resources and funding, and (e) lack of skilled and trained educators. The first three themes were common across teachers and doctors, whereas, the final two themes were unique to teachers. Findings are discussed in the context of implications for practice, research, and inclusion of students with a developmental disability.
