Nineteenth-Century Baptists and Church Discipline: Case Studies from Georgia.
- Authors
West, Jim
- Abstract
The article discusses Baptist church discipline in history, with six case studies from the state of Georgia. An early handbook on the topic, the 1774 "Summary of Church Discipline" published by the Charleston (South Carolina) Baptist Association, is discussed, including the duties of pastors, deacons, and church members, and provisions for various levels of punishment. Also discussed is a study of 19th-century Baptist church discipline published by Gregory Wills, followed by the Georgia case studies, which took place between 1850 and 1900, and a discussion of the decline of church discipline starting in the 20th century.
