- Abstract
Purpose: Visual impairment is a partial or total loss of vision due to a medical condition such as congenital conditions, birth trauma, disease or injury. The aim of this study is to determine the prevalence of caries, trauma history and oral hygiene status of visually impaired students in Istanbul University Faculty of Dentistry student club unhandicapped smiles. Method: This study was conducted on the visually impaired students of Turkan Sabanci School under the leadership of Istanbul University, Faculty of Dentistry, Department of Pediatric dentistry. Oral examination of individuals with disabilities on a chair; sterilized mirror, probe, presel was carried out with the help of the light of day. Individuals in cases of malocclusion, trauma, the presence of dental anomalies and dmfs values were recorded on the survey form. Results: Ages ranging between 6 and 21, 64 girls, 66 boys with a total of 130 visually impaired person has been examined. The average age of the population was 9,9. The mean dmft and DMFT scores of the students were 2.42 and 2.04, respectively. Children of 78.4% in the presence of caries was observed in varying proportions. 8 students (%6) have a trauma history. Conclussion: Caries prevalance and severity in visually impaired children were very high, and the number of childen with good oral hygiene was very low. Maintenance of oral hygiene remains the most outstanding challenge in the care of visually impaired children. The sense of touch must be utilised when instructing the blind patient in oral hygiene methods.
