Uses of iPad Applications in Music Therapy.

- Abstract
The unquestioned leader in tablet computer technology is Apple. Since the release of the first iPad in 2010, development of software applications (apps) with uses for music therapists has increased dramatically. Apps for musical instruments, notation/ composition, and recording/playback range from easy-to-use interfaces to highly technical apps for industry professionals. Another subset of apps has gained popularity with caregivers and clinicians because of the ease of facility with the light, portable, and affordable iPad. Developers have begun to collaborate with these populations to create offerings that assist with alternative and augmentative communication, data tracking, and assessment/evaluation. Music therapists may assist their clientele by adopting iPad apps as part of their clinical practice, provided it fits a model of evidence-based practice. While there is little research on the specific clinical use of iPad apps, it is clear from the wealth of music therapy conference proceedings and continuing education courses that music therapists can creatively adapt musical and documentation apps to augment their own practice and attempt to improve client outcomes. This article describes the pertinent research on iPad apps, lists and describes apps in several categories of importance for music therapists, and concludes with a look forward at how our profession might incorporate apps into clinical practice.
