- Abstract
The article discusses the rise of book illustration from 1830 to 1848 in France. It is stated that during the period, wood engraving was the main form of book illustration but was viewed as one of the cheapest forms. According to the article, authors and artists complained that the use of wood engravings degrades the standards of both the arts through inferior reproductions, and literature, as the author's text is reduced to poor images. The views of Frédéric de Mercey on wood engraving is also discussed.
