- Title
Measuring Preventable Harm.
- Authors
Pronovost, Peter J.; Colantouni, Elizabeth
- Abstract
The authors offer commentary on the need for evidence-based research into measuring the effectiveness of patient safety programs and safety outcomes in hospitals. It is noted that barriers to measuring safety outcomes are related to poor financial investment and a lack of political motivation to investigate patient safety and preventable harm. The importance of differentiating between preventable harm and inevitable harm is stressed. Potential strategies to make this crucial distinction involving various sensitivity and specificity measures are detailed.
