- Abstract
The article describes the life and work of Francisco de Zurbarán, whose painting "A Cup of Water and a Rose on a Silver Plate, circa 1630" appears on the cover of the March 25, 2009 issue of the journal. The painting is noted for its modest size and subtle energy when compared to Zurbarán's more famous large paintings of the Immaculate Conception and the Crucifixion. The painter’s life in post-plague Seville, Spain, to which he moved with his second wife in 1629, is described. The artist's few still-life paintings resemble his religious works in their luminosity and unadorned simplicity.
