- Abstract
Introduction: The growing increase in the elderly population has brought to light discussions about the need to protect this group against abuse and aggression, in Brazil and around the world. Objective: This study aims to review and discuss violence against the elderly, addressing the issue from a national and international point of view, correlating the dentist as an important agent for identifying cases. Literature review: The research was carried out from the literature search, to obtain a global view on the subject, considering its social, legal and psychological aspects. The subject is vast in socio-anthropological information and scarce regarding the importance of the health professional. Discussion: It can be understood that there is a prevalence of the elderly woman as the main affected, as well as the son or spouse as the main aggressors. Furthermore, it is notorious that violence has many faces, such as psychological, physical, sexual and financial. Based on all the issues dealt with and collected in the literature, we seek to emphasize the need for research on the role of health professionals - especially, in this work, the dentist. Conclusion: This study shows that violence against the elderly is an important topic to be discussed, including protective measures, approach in undergraduate courses for professionals trained in vigilant care. The issue takes on greater proportions due to the Covid-19 pandemic, with confinement of the elderly, absence of caregivers, forced living with potential aggressors working in home office, and exposure to financial abuse.
