- Title
The Trumpet and the Wolf: Noises of Battle in Old English Poetry.
- Authors
Jorgensen, Alice
- Abstract
The article focuses on the portrayal of battle in Old English poetry as noisy. It examines the relationship in Old English texts between violence, language and noise in Old English texts, using Elaine Scarry's theorization of pain in "The Body of Pain." It also suggests that language subjected to violence degenerates into noise. The author argues that the depiction of noise makes the readers experience "Exodus" as a violent poem.
