I Dialogi di Gregorio Magno nel XVI secolo nella lettura di Protestanti e Cattolici.
- Authors

- Abstract
My paper focuses on Pope Gregory the Great's Dialogi and the fortuna they had among both Protestant--Lutherans in particular--and Catholic scholars in the second half of 16th Century (when their Gregorian authorship was first brought into question). To this end, I not only have examined several relevant editions of Gregory the Great's complete works, but also looked at such works as the Margdeburg Centuries and John Bale's historical writings for the Protestant side, and the at postridentine liturgical books and Cesare Baronio's Annales Ecclesiastici for the Catholic one. Obviously, these works are only a small part of the controversial, devotional and erudite literature produced during the periode under review, but they are representative of the attempt by both sides of the confessional divide to reconstruct the history of the Church and its doctrine since its origins. Furthermore, they offer an interesting point of view to reflect on the fortuna of Dialogi as well as upon the reputation of Gregory.
