- Title
CHILDREN OF TRUTH: The Role of Apprentices in Etrusco-Roman Divination.
- Authors
MARAS, DANIELE F.
- Abstract
A number of Etruscan visual monuments from the Archaic to the late Republican periods provide evidence for the participation of children as assistants of mature or elder haruspices in divinatory rituals. This is confirmed by certain literary sources that highlight the role of children as guarantors of the correctness of the consultations. The author argues that these children were apprentices initiated into the Etrusca disciplina and destined to succeed their masters. As a confirmation, the number of 120 Etruscan aristocrats mentioned by Cicero and Valerius Maximus in relationship to the enrollment into the order of the Sixty Haruspices is perfectly compatible with the number of 60 regular haruspices and as many apprentices.
