A reprint of the article which appeared in the Winter 1990 issue is presented in which the author offers a criticism of structure in African American literature. She mentions the use of voice in literature by African American women, the sense of self, and how memory works with the self. Works discussed include "The Bluest Eye," by Toni Morrison, "The Women of Brewster Place," by Gloria Naylor, and "Sassafrass, Cypress & Indigo," by Ntozake Shange.
