- Abstract
This article discusses the production history and popularity of the late-19th century play "A Trip to Coontown" by Robert "Bob" Cole and Billy Johnson. The production was one of the few of its era performed, directed, and produced entirely by African Americans. The authors begin by describing their work locating the play's manuscript through research at the Library of Congress. The play's songs are described, with emphasis given to their display of many musical genres. The alleged genius of Cole's performance during the play is also examined.
