MYOPIA: An epidemic of global proportions.
- Authors
Tomiyama, Erin S.
- Abstract
The article discusses the global epidemic of myopia, a condition characterized by blurred distance vision. The prevalence of myopia is increasing worldwide, with the highest rates found in Asia-Pacific countries. The development of myopia is influenced by genetic, environmental, and lifestyle factors, with time spent outdoors and near work playing a role in reducing myopia. Myopia is associated with various ocular complications, including cataracts, glaucoma, and myopic macular degeneration, which can lead to vision impairment. The economic burden of myopia is significant, resulting in direct costs and productivity loss. Myopia management therapies, such as spectacle lenses, low-dose atropine, soft peripheral defocus contact lenses, and orthokeratology lenses, should be implemented to combat the consequences of myopia.
