- Abstract
This document summarizes a Cochrane review on the use of bisphosphonates for osteoporosis in individuals with cystic fibrosis (CF). The review included nine clinical trials and found that bisphosphonates may increase bone mineral density (BMD) in the spine and hip after 12 months of treatment. However, there was no significant difference in fracture rates between the treatment and control groups. Bisphosphonates may also cause bone pain. The authors concluded that while bisphosphonates may increase BMD in individuals with CF, more research is needed to determine their effectiveness in reducing fractures. Preventive care and collaboration among healthcare professionals are important in managing CF-related bone health.
