- Abstract
During the last decades the Tuareg have developed in the Sahara a transnational space of agency, where the boundaries between legal and illegal are merged, and the differences between trade, smuggling and migration have become blurred. The Tuareg organize transport, provide necessary facilities, and deliver passengers and goods through the Sahara. This business with the border is called afrod and has become an important economic niche of the Tuareg. But in the course of the geopolitical insecurity in the Sahara and the Sahel their activities around the border experienced new conditions and challenges. The Libyan war, the political crisis in Mali, the rise of Islamist terror groups and the increase in drug trafficking had major impacts on the Tuareg in Niger. New itineraries, new players, and new goods entered the scene, and the local perception of afrod has changed.
