Does the \"Race to the Top\" Include Literature? Why Reading Books Still Matters in a Data-Driven World.
- Authors
Alsup, Janet
- Abstract
The article presents the author's view on the importance of reading books and teaching literature in schools in the U.S. based on the key standards outlined in the Common Core State Standards document available at www.corestandards.org to meet the requirements of U.S. President Barack Obama's Race to the Top program. The author mentions her concerns about the future of the teaching of children's literature in school, given the issues of school failure and reform. She suggests that the standards must be adopted for eligibility to compete for the Race to the Top funding but criticizes the omission of literature appreciation and responses arguing that these literary responses are significant in the development of reflective, empathic, and culturally-sensitive individuals.
