The article presents a keynote speech given by David Brody at the eleventh National Labour History Conference in Perth, Australia on July 8, 2009. Topics discussed include the labor climate in the U.S. and how it seemed to differ from that of Australia when he first visited in 1984, negotiations leading up to Australia's Employee Free Choice Act, his view that labor law in the U.S. cannot serve as a useful model for Australia, the notion of free labor, the Pullman Boycott of 1894, and the U.S. National Labor Relations Act.
