- Authors
Novossiltzeff, Richard
- Abstract
The article discusses the history of the Avro York transport airplanes, focusing particularly on their use in the construction of the Distant Early Warning (DEW) Line facilities, a U.S. and Canadian project to defend against possible Arctic incursion by Soviet forces initiated in 1954 during the Cold War. The Avro York was developed during World War II and served during the Berlin Airlift of 1948-1949. In 1955, Spartan Air Services purchased eleven Avro Yorks for DEW service, the last retired in 1960. Details of airplane crashes involving Avro Yorks are presented.
