- Abstract
In February 1715, the 14-year old Zinzendorf gave a talk on Aristotle in the Pedagogium Regii in Halle, where he was a pupil from 1710 to 1716. Not only is the talk itself extant but also a whole conglomerate of sources and statements that are closely related to the talk. This presents the rare opportunity to gain an insight not only into everyday life in the school at Halle, as documented by materials from a pupil, but also into Zinzendorf's editorial considerations of how to treat the topic. On the one hand, these con siderations relate to the content of the talk ("Aristotle"). The customary piece about the life of the great philosopher struck him as too boring. Therefore, he prepared a critical talk about the mistakes of this "godlessly ambitious man" and the fools that admire him. Furthermore, in this package of sources about Aristotle we find very clear expressions of opinion by Zinzendorf as a pupil about his personal situation in this boarding school, which was not very pleasant. Finally, the very nuanced way in which the adolescent Zinzendorf reports on the talk to his parents is interesting. His attempt to emancipate himself from his parents becomes evident.
