- Abstract
This letter, published in the journal Obesity Surgery, discusses the use of glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1 RAs) for weight loss and bariatric surgery. The authors express concern about the off-label use of GLP-1 RAs and the potential for adverse events (AEs). They highlight a study comparing GLP-1 RAs with another drug, bupropion-naltrexone, which found an increased risk of AEs. The authors suggest that more research is needed to establish clear guidelines for pharmacological management after bariatric surgery and to determine the appropriate use of GLP-1 RAs. They also emphasize the importance of educating patients about potential gastrointestinal AEs and the need for healthcare professionals to stay updated on the latest information. The authors conclude by stating that with proper regulation and training, GLP-1 RAs can be used safely and effectively for weight loss and bariatric surgery.
