- Title
Rural Tibetans owe billions under forced resettlement.
- Abstract
The article reports on China's project for the resettlement of 330,000 Tibetan farmers and herdsmen in socialist villages. Controversies regarding this project include the debt-burdens of Tibetans in the payment for loans they are forced to take for the construction of the new homes, measly government subsidies, and their compulsory resettlement. This project is to make visually attractive roadside clusters of buildings for visitor's appreciation and for the ease of social and political control.
